Independent quality assessment of a commercial quantum random number generator

Abstract We reverse-engineer, test and analyse hardware firmware of the commercial quantum-optical random number generator Quantis from ID Quantique. show that $>99\%$ > 99 % its output data originates in physically processes: timing photon absorption a semiconductor material, growth avalanche owing to impact ionisation. Under strong assumption these processes correspond measurement an initially pure state components, our analysis implies unpredictability generated randomness. have also found minor non-random contributions imperfections detector electronics internal processing algorithm, specific this particular device. Our work shows design quality randomness source can be verified without cooperation manufacturer access engineering documentation.
